The subject of gay men having children is one that draws definite opinions everywhere – you are either for it or you are not and baby boomers, like everyone else, are divided on the issue.

Psychological articles debate people’s conflicting opinions that gay men, while being free to pursue their sexual preferences to the extent that they can co-habit, socialise freely and get married if they so desire, cannot provide an emotionally and socially healthy environment in which a child can develop normally.  The issues are so obvious that one hardly needs to point them out but certain factors are thought to affect the likelihood of gay men making successful parents.

Geographical location can make a difference to whether a child might flourish happily in a gay home environment.  Baby boomers who are gay and who reside in New York or San Francisco where the gay community is vast and accepted might raise a child within that community and the arrangement would be accepted readily in the school playground.

In a tiny community in old fashioned farming America, such acceptance, rightly or wrongly, would not be forthcoming, rendering the child a target for every school bully with an eye for a victim.  The social vulnerabilities of children brought up in alternative family units cannot be dismissed when considering whether gay men make suitable parents. Whether they should or not, some are and some pursue having children through surrogacy.

Surrogacy can lend ‘cosiness’ to the experience of becoming a parent by proxy that adoption cannot offer.  Adoption produces a child as a complete package, actually, and the process of pregnancy and birth is sidestepped altogether as the adoptive parents have no involvement.  Surrogacy is a joint effort and the new parents can make all the preparations that accompany the arrival of a new baby, along with the requisite nine month wait for the little bundle to appear.  Psychological articles underline that the process ‘normalises’ the experience for gay couples whose desire for children until a few short years ago was an impossible dream.

Gay couples, both men and women, actually make dedicated ‘hands-on’ parents with responsible attitudes toward education, health and social development for their children.  Some gay men are ‘heterosexual converts’ whose past life included raising children now living with ex partners and whose paternal credentials are in fact excellent.

In recent years there has been speculation that gay couples produce gay children but in fact there are no real facts to support this assumption and there is evidence that gay couples produce well balanced, emotionally healthy children who are heterosexual yet deeply attached to their gay parents.

Gay baby boomers considering having children through surrogacy certainly have hurdles to face.  From the children’s point of view, the issue seems to be whether one’s parents and loving, affectionate and attentive rather than heterosexual, gay, or even bi-sexual.  Conversely, baby boomers that are heterosexual might produce gay children but their home environment is not questioned or thought to be in any way responsible for their child’s sexuality.

Some people are so desperate to have a child of their own, they will go to any lengths. The people who sell babies on the black market are called baby brokers. While such dealings aren’t as well known today as in the past, they still take place. Black market babies were often easy for brokers to find in the 1940’s, 1950’s, and 1960’s. Families were disgraced by young girls who were not married conceiving a child. The girls were often sent away until after the baby was born. These girls were either told the baby had died during childbirth or they were given up for adoption.

In most cases, the young girls were housed together and well cared for. They got prenatal care and were schooled so that they wouldn’t fall behind when they returned home after the baby was born. However, they weren’t given accurate information regarding the names of the places they stayed or even the adults who took care of them. It is believed the brokers of these black market babies turned heavy profits. They were able to charge room and board from the parents of the young girls as well as sell the babies for very high prices.

It has been very hard for children who were sold on the black market to find their true parents because in many cases the information on the birth certificates were falsified. This is unfortunate for those who want to find their birth families, especially if they suffer from genetic health disorders. It has also been very difficult for those young mothers who did not want to give up their child, or who were told their baby had died when in fact they knew it was a lie.

It is believed black market baby brokering still takes place in some areas. While it is more acceptable in our society for unwed women to bare a child, many of them don’t have the resources to take care of a child on their own. They may choose to sell their child to the broker who in turn sells it to parents so desperate for a child that they will pay any price that the broker sets.

Buying A Ferret

Baby ferrets, which are known as kits, can be bought from a breeder, a pet store or adopted from an animal shelter. An adult male ferret is called a hob and an adult female ferret is referred to as a jill.

Adopting A Ferret

When baby ferrets are ready for adoption they will have already been weaned and be on solid food. Even still, their teeth won’t yet be sharp enough to chew any hard food. You’ll want to soak their food in warm water for approximately 5 to 10 minutes to make it easier for them to eat.

The best type of food to give them would be the kind that is specially formulated for ferrets – and specifically for baby ferrets. Some people will opt to feed their ferret cat food. If you do this, make sure it’s a premium quality food and check the protein and fat levels very carefully. You want to make sure that you’re getting the proper amounts of protein and fat that your ferret requires.

Ferret Diet

Be aware that your kit needs more fat and protein than a kitten does. Ferrets have a rapid gastrointestinal transit time of about 3 to 4 hours. This means that they need high-quality, easily digestible protein sources. Make sure that any food you give to your baby ferret contains 35-40% protein and 20% fat.

Your kit needs a good balance of meat and poultry products to be able to avoid any risk of urinary tract or intestinal blockages. On top of this, your ferret needs to have water available, either in a dish or bottle, at all times.

What About Ferret Snacks?

Strictly speaking, ferrets just don’t need snacks. However, you can offer very small portions of bananas, crackers and raisins. These kind of snacks may help as a treat in the training process.

Ferret Cages

Your baby ferret’s cage should be large enough to let him move around without getting hurt and you should also anticipate his growth. It’s always a good idea to get a cage that is easy to clean, as well. Check the bar spacing, too. You don’t want him to be able to slip through the bars and get loose.

When looking for an easy to clean cage, look for one with a plastic bottom. They’re usually the easiest type to clean. When you’re cleaning their cage, be sure to change and wash their bedding, too. Ferrets like soft bedding, sleep sacks and hammocks.

Ferret Litter Training

You should start litter training your baby ferret right away. The best time for training is right after they wake up or after they have eaten. So that they get the idea, place them in the litter tray and don’t let them leave until they have done their business. Give them a little treat when they’ve done what is expected. Never, ever punish them if they have an accident. They simply won’t understand and may become afraid of you. Be patient and eventually they’ll get the idea.

Ferret Toys

Baby ferrets like to have lot of toys to play with. Pet stores should have a good selection. Be sure, though, that whatever toys you choose can stand up to your ferret’s sharp little teeth. Make a habit of checking their toys for signs of wear as they will eventually chew through most of them.

Baby ferrets need a lot of love and attention. They also need to visit the vet for vaccinations and anti rabies shots so they can remain healthy and stay with you for a very long time.

Two women were caught by authorities in an adoption scandal using fake birth certificates from 1990-1999 in Eastern New York according to NewYorkTimes. But, fake birth certificates weren’t the only warning signs that something was wrong.

It’s frightening to think they had the look of women selling Avon products. Arlene Lieberman and Arlene Reingold looked for “clients” at malls. They would hold coffee and muffin meet-and-greet sessions. They invited unsuspecting clients to their split-level homes in Long Island.

The victims also revealed that the women threw in a ”God bless you” or two in most of their exchanges with others. Mrs. Lieberman was keeping the books saved on the computer in her son’s bedroom.

These women claimed to be adoption consultants. Now federal officials say that they were actually baby sellers, smuggling children from Mexico to New York for couples so desperate for children that they ignored clear signs of trouble.

The Warning Signs of an Illegal Adoption

1.) No immigration papers were given to parents in some cases. This is a significant sign something is terribly wrong.  What would keep a child you adopted from being deported if you aren’t given proper documentation?

2.) It seemed too good to be true. Many parent’s that were interviewed after the ordeal said they thought of the suspects as normal housewives with an intriguing side project.

The officials also arrested the lawyer working with them who practiced law in Arizona and Mexico. He is believed to have paid women in Mexico to pretend to be the mothers of babies being smuggled to the U.S, so that the infants would be allowed to cross the border.

Take Birth Documentation into Your Own Hands
